Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
I just love the way that the Bible begins. I love the first four words, perhaps the greatest words ever, “In the beginning God”. We would do well to consider, daily, that God is responsible for it all. He is, has always been and will always be. Praise His mighty name!
Genesis 1:3
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
How awesome it is that God spoke all things into existence. Imagine being able to create through speaking. Right off the bat we should have a tremendous reverence and awe for God, our Creator, and for the power of His word.
Genesis 1:26
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Notice the words ‘Us’ and ‘Our’. This is a reference to the Trinity. In others words, Jesus and the Holy Spirit were there with God from the beginning. Because, like God, they are eternal. Colossians 1:16 confirms this, For by Him (Jesus) all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
Genesis 2:7
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Chapter 2 focuses on the creation of man. The first chapter gives an overview of all of the creation, with an emphasis on man in the second chapter.
Genesis 2:18
And the Lord God said, “ It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
While the Bible speaks clearly that there is a natural order of a man being in Godly authority over a woman, this mustn’t be misunderstood to mean that the woman is somehow subservient to the man. Here we see that God created a woman and gave her to man as a ‘comparable’ helpmate.
Genesis 3:4-5
Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Jesus said that Satan is the father of lies, that lying is his native language. We see from the beginning that the devil uses lies to try to trip man up, and unfortunately he has been quite successful at it.
Genesis 3:12
Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”
Notice how quickly the whole ‘blame game’ gets started. Keep in mind, as you read through these first chapters, that all of the Bible is about the fall of man, and God’s plan to redeem mankind back to Himself. How tragic that man lasted a whole two chapters in the Bible.
Genesis 3:21
Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.
It is fascinating to me that the first shedding of blood in the Bible was the sacrifice of an animal to cover man’s sin. What a great picture of what Jesus did for us!
Matthew 1:1
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
The a Gospel of Matthew begins with the genealogy of Jesus. We see a similar genealogy in Luke’s gospel, however Matthew follows the lineage of Joseph, while Luke follows the lineage of Mary.
Matthew 1:21
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Oh how I love this verse! It succinctly encompasses why Jesus was born. To save. Notice, ‘His people’ from their sins. Oh what a glorious thing this is? Jesus was born to die, that we might live. Jesus was born, so that we might be ‘born again’ Hallelujah! We belong to Him.
