Deuteronomy 22-24

Deuteronomy 22:5
“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the Lord your God.

These are the kinds of verses that our world would just as soon overlook. However, even though they are in the Old Testament, there is something to be said about them as it pertains to today. We would be wise to take heed.

Deuteronomy 22:22
“If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die—the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil from Israel.

Sexual sin of any kind is something that is greatly frowned upon by the Lord. He created sex for a distinct purpose, procreation and to be enjoyed as an expression of love between a husband and a wife. Anything outside of these parameters is sin and must be avoided. We cannot expect to receive God’s blessings if we ignore his statutes regarding sexual intimacy. Unfortunately today, people all around us are disregarding His ways, even to include the church. In many ways, we are already suffering the consequences of such things.

Deuteronomy 23:2
“One of illegitimate birth shall not enter the assembly of the Lord; even to the tenth generation none of his descendants shall enter the assembly of the Lord.

The idea of such verses is to give the idea of the impossibility of perfecting ourselves. We often tend to think more highly of ourselves and forget this. It is good to be reminded how badly we need a Savior.

Deuteronomy 23:12-14
“Also you shall have a place outside the camp, where you may go out; 13 and you shall have an implement among your equipment, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and turn and cover your refuse. 14 For the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and give your enemies over to you; therefore your camp shall be holy, that He may see no unclean thing among you, and turn away from you.

These are such sobering verses to remind us of how pure and holy the Lord is. They should help to keep us in check in guarding our tongues and our mouths against speaking any sort of crude thing that would dishonor the Lord. He dwells among us all of the time and we should live our lives accordingly.

Deuteronomy 23:19
“You shall not charge interest to your brother—interest on money or food or anything that is lent out at interest.

When we give or loan to people, we should be willing to do it unconditionally.

Deuteronomy 24:16
“Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; a person shall be put to death for his own sin.

Each person will be accountable for what they did with their own lives when we stand before the Lord. We will not be able to blame our parents or anyone else for the things we have done in our lives. We must take individual responsibility for all we have done, both good and bad.
