Genesis 25-26

Genesis 25:6
6 But Abraham gave gifts to the sons of the concubines which Abraham had; and while he was still living he sent them eastward, away from Isaac his son, to the country of the east.

Concubines were common in that day as were multiple wives. A concubine was a wife of secondary rank. I will never fully understand why God allowed such a thing, but it is clear that Christianity has restored the sacred institution of marriage to its original character, and concubinage is ranked with the sins of fornication and adultery.

Genesis 25:13
13 And these were the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: The firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

It is interesting that the Arabs are descendants of Ishmael, especially in light of the the problems that this nation has caused over the years. Ishmael was a work of Abraham and Sarah’s flesh. Works of the flesh may temporarily satisfy, but in the long run they will always cause problems.

Genesis 25:32
32 And Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?”

I am amazed at how easy it is to overlook God’s best for our lives because we want something now. When I think about all of the trouble ‘instant credit’ causes for people, I think, “Oh Lord, teach us how to wait patiently for you to provide, lest we despise something that is important to us and even more so to You.”

Genesis 26:6-7
6 So Isaac dwelt in Gerar. 7 And the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, “She is my sister”; for he was afraid to say, “ She is my wife,” because he thought, “lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to behold.”

Like father like son!

Genesis 26:24
24 And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham’s sake.”

Throughout the bible we see the Lord reminding his people of the promises he made to them. Today we have the Holy Spirit and Gods word to constantly remind us as well. He doesn’t want us to forget!

Genesis 26:35
35 And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.

Adult children can break your heart. Lord help us to never break Yours.
