Genesis 23-24, Matthew 7

Genesis 23:19
19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.

I have been thinking a lot lately about the frailty of this life and the reality of heaven. As I think about how much stock we put into this life and every effort we make to preserve it, I think about the millions of people who have already crossed the threshold from this life to the next. The more I think about it and the reality of what Jesus has prepared for us when we leave this old tent, the more confident I become in the glory that awaits His church. I find myself thinking about heaven more, and anticipate the joy of going there.

Genesis 24:3-4
3 and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; 4 but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

Throughout the bible we are exhorted to stay far away from things that distract us from a close relationship with the Lord. Marrying a non-believer is one of the most dangerous things a man or woman can do. I have seen it over and over again. It’s tragic and only leads to heartache. I once read, “God gives the very best to those who leave the choice to Him.” I absolutely believe this to be true! My wife Jenny is a living example of is truth.

Genesis 24:15
15 And it happened, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder.

This is one of the most beautiful pictures of God answering prayers even before we finish praying. I marvel at how much He loves us and wants to care for us. I love Him so much for His constant care.

Genesis 24:52
52 And it came to pass, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, that he worshiped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth.

Our immediate response to answered prayer, should always be heartfelt worship.

Genesis 24:63
63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted his eyes and looked, and there, the camels were coming.

Wonderful things happen when we mediate upon the Lord!

Matthew 7:24-25
24 “ Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

My heart is so stirred as I read the words of Jesus. More than anything, I want my house to stand strong, and I know that this is only possible by establishing it upon every word and truth of Jesus. When I do this, it cannot fall. What a tremendous comfort this is!
